Where should I place my banners for maximum impact?

Pay sites, or membership sites, have a higher quality of traffic, meaning that there are more people who are willing to pay for what they’re looking for. Even though the numbers may be smaller, pay site traffic offers the highest conversions, or sign-ups.

1. The best way to promote within a membership site is to place advertisements directly in the members’ areas. Discreetly putting up a banner in the members’ areas will not offend the members, as long as the banners are unobtrusive yet clearly visible to the surfer.

2. Many pay sites place advertisements on their front pages. Giving the surfers many options upon arrival usually results in an increase in traffic sent, which can then lead to conversions, and cash for you. The only thing to consider is that if you are on a front page with lots of other banners......try not to be "lost in the crowd", and maybe consider having your banner there, but also somewhere else on the site where it will stand out more.

3. Pop-up windows have become a very popular method of attracting surfers who visit pay sites. They are invaluable tools for promoting sites because each window is completely separate from the pay site and can pop-up at any specified point in the site. Many sites use pop-ups on their front pages, but an even better strategy is an exit pop-up. Exit pop-ups mainly target surfers who are probably uninterested in what the pay site has to offer, but also targets surfers who may have just completed a “session” on the pay site. In either case, the exit pop-up offers something different.

It says to the surfers, “So you’re done with that site? Try this one.” Some surfers dislike pop-ups, probably because they've experienced “infinite pop-ups” that, when closed, spawn numerous pop-up “babies” that eventually crash their computers. Be careful not to annoy the surfer with numerous pop-ups and if placing an exit pop-up try to make sure that yours is the only exit pop-up which will occur.
